On the eve of the opening of the bauma trade fair, the winners of the bauma Innovation Award were announced. In the research category, the DeepSea Sampling project came out on top.
A total of 133 applications were received for the bauma Innovation Award 2022. In two rounds of voting, a jury of experts and a task force selected the 15 nominees. The DeepSea Sampling project came out on top in the research category. On behalf of the project participants, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Sobczyk from the TU Bergakademie Freiberg was pleased to receive the award.
About the project
In the DeepSea Sampling joint project, a consortium of seven partners is developing a template that can be used for vertical ore mining in the deep sea.
The aim is to cover the increasing demand for raw materials in the long term by developing new deposits. As yet unexplored deposits (for example of massive sulphides) in the deep sea from 2,000 m below sea level offer great potential for this. New machines and technologies are needed for exploration and extraction, which the project is working on.
