The drill-core archive currently under construction on Lessingstraße in Freiberg is still a building site – from 2027, it will house the drill cores and geological findings of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and the State Office for the Environment, Agriculture and Geology. International artists were invited to submit their proposals for the design of the entrance area. The winner was the Leipzig-based artist Franziska Möbius with her design ‘INSIGHTS’ – a glass installation reminiscent of the shape and analysis of drill cores.  Read more...

A helicopter operated by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources is currently flying over the area around Gottesberg this week (expected to continue until 12 September 2026). Using the helicopter and kilometres of power cables laid on the ground, a team from the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, together with project partners, is surveying the subsurface in the western Ore Mountains. The aim of the measurements is to create the most accurate possible 3D model of the underground tin deposits.  Read more...

On 23 June 2026, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on university cooperation was signed between the Tomás Frías Autonomous University (UATF) in Potosí and TUBAF. The Bolivian university, situated in the world’s highest city at an altitude of 4,000 metres, owes its foundation – just like the TU Bergakademie Freiberg – to the silver ore deposits here on the ‘Cerro Rico’ mountain. Key areas of cooperation between the partners include geological exploration of the ore-rich region, sustainability in the extraction and processing of raw materials, the recovery of valuable materials, environmental protection – particularly with regard to water – and renewable energy sources. The focus is on lithium and the rare earth elements, which are strategic metals for Europe.  Read more...
