Germany's only metal-free clean room laboratory for the geosciences opened at TUBAF

TU Bergakademie Freiberg already has a cleanroom laboratory for the field of applied physics - now, a second one is being added. However, the new cleanroom laboratory at the Institute of Mineralogy has a special feature: it is metal-free. This means that the furnishings and equipment are made entirely of non-metallic material, with the necessary metal parts encased in synthetic substances. If thery were exposed to metal in the room, the highly sensitive analyses for dating rocks would be falsified.  Read more...

Europe-wide unique pilot project for a greenhouse gas-neutral circular economy is underway in Lusatia

The three Universities of Technology in Chemnitz, Dresden and Freiberg and the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences signed the cooperation agreement for the joint establishment of the "Green Circular Economy" (CircEcon) research campus, which will receive over 108 million euros in funding.  Read more...

Success for Freiberg scientist: Career in Science thanks to Emmy Noether Programme

Materials scientist Hanka Becker from TU Bergakademie Freiberg has been awarded two million euros in funding from the DFG's Emmy Noether Programme for research into the recycling of aluminium. "TUBAF ist ein wichtiger Baustein" – Minister Dulig zur Neuen Sächsischen Rohstoffstrategie

Sachsens Staatsminister für Wirtschaft, Arbeit und Verkehr Martin Dulig war in Freiberg. Hier fand am 11. Januar 2024 die 1. Sächsische Rohstoffkonferenz statt. Diese wurde von der TU Bergakademie Freiberg und Martin Duligs Ministerium gemeinsam ausgerichtet. Auf der Konferenz zog Minister Dulig eine Zwischenbilanz der Neuen Sächsischen Rohstoffstrategie, welche neben den Primär- und Sekundärrohstoffen erstmals auch die nachwachsenden Rohstoffe miteinbezieht. International study of lakes: Once oxygen deficient, always oxygen deficient

Anoxia threatens inland waters worldwide. Once it has occurred in a lake, the lack of oxygen even sets in motion a downward spiral that accelerates with increasing global warming. This is indicated by the results of an international study involving researchers of TU Bergakademie Freiberg, which were published in the scientific journal "Global Change Biology". According to the study, lakes that were once affected by a lack of oxygen in deep water are affected again the following year. As a result, the living conditions for fish and invertebrates continue to deteriorate, greenhouse gases are increasingly released and nutrient cycles are intensified.  Read more...

Using clay to combat eternal toxins

PFAS filters available for industrial waste are usually made of activated carbon (PFAS = perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl compounds). As this is comparatively expensive, researchers are looking for alternative filter materials for the so-called "eternal toxins", whose hazardous residues only degrade very slowly in the environment. A team from the TU Bergakademie Freiberg is now proposing a clay made of bentonite modified with organic substances as a possible PFAS filter. The results appear in the current issue of the journal "Chemie Ingenieur Technik".  Read more...

H2 ready? Collaborative project shows use of hydrogen in industrial ovens

Whether for steel and glass production or in many other industrial plants: burners that convert hydrogen into heat instead of natural gas in the future are - alongside electricity from renewable energies - the basis for a successful energy transition in industry. But how can this work when hydrogen has significantly different properties to natural gas? Over the past three years, a research project at TU Bergakademie Freiberg has been investigating solutions for industrial furnaces, industrial heating systems and furnaces.
