A great success for the spin-off from TU Bergakademie Freiberg: CYNiO GmbH, based in Bitterfeld-Wolfen, has been awarded the Saxony-Anhalt 2026 Business Prize in the "Start-up" category. Seit Dienstag, 31.03.2026, bietet die terra mineralia, die Mineraliensammlung der TU Bergakademie Freiberg, ein neues Marketing-Ticket: Bei einem in der terra mineralia erworbenen Kombiticket für die terra mineralia und das Krügerhaus fällt in den geowissenschaftlichen Sammlungen der ermäßigte Eintrittspreis an. TUBAF expertise in demand in Australia

Last year, an Australian delegation led by the German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce and Germany Trade & Invest travelled to Germany to find out more about the coal phase-out; the return visit has now taken place in the Australian state of New South Wales. There, in the Hunter Valley coal region near Newcastle, open-cast mines will be closed in the coming years, the spatial and economic-social dimensions of which are comparable to the large German open-cast lignite mines that are also due to be closed.  Read more...

Innovative kiln for more environmentally friendly concrete

In order to turn mineral raw materials into cement clinker, mortar or refractory material, energy-intensive intermediate steps are required in which the structure and chemical composition of the raw materials are changed at high temperatures. Various preliminary products and finally materials for the construction, ceramics and metal industries are produced. In an innovative rotary kiln, researchers at TU Bergakademie Freiberg are now testing how conventional gas burner systems can be replaced by electrically heated induction plasma burners for the manufacturing process of the preliminary products in the future.  Read more...

Using green electricity instead of gas: more environmentally friendly production for brown glass tested

The production of amber glass in Germany emits around 0.58 million tonnes of CO2 per year. A new method will soon make the process more environmentally friendly: In a research project, researchers at TU Bergakademie Freiberg have further developed an all-electric melting process for the production of amber glass and tested it on a laboratory scale. The so-called glass melting tank is heated entirely with electricity instead of natural gas: around 86 per cent of CO2 emissions could be saved in this way. This corresponds to the annual CO2 emissions of around 77,000 households. In addition, the amount of colour or sulphur carrier can be halved.  Read more...

The power of lightness: How new processes unlock the potential of magnesium for lightweight construction

It is lighter than aluminium. Despite this, magnesium has hardly been utilised by industry to date, as its processing into components is considered complex and energy-intensive. After three years of research, a team from various departments at TU Bergakademie Freiberg, together with industrial partners, developed and tested an end-to-end process chain for lightweight magnesium components - from the melt to the functional prototype.  Read more...

Milestone on the way to a large scale e-fuels plant

For the first time, the Freiberg petrol synthesis plant at the Institute of Energy Process Engineering and Chemical Engineering (IEC) has produced renewable petrol. 23,000 litres of almost climate-neutral petrol were produced. The green fuel is based on e-methanol, which was produced in Kassø, Denmark. The collaboration with the international partner is a decisive step that TUBAF and its industrial partner, CAC ENGINEERING GmbH, have taken in the direction of an industrial plant for e-fuels. With this development step, the team can both operate the production plant more process-efficiently and reliably demonstrate that up to 90 per cent CO2 savings compared to fossil petrol are possible with the help of a carbon cycle.  Read more...
