A new phase of cooperation has begun: TUBAF and the University of Potosí intend to work more closely together in future

On 23 June 2026, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on university cooperation was signed between the Tomás Frías Autonomous University (UATF) in Potosí and TUBAF. The Bolivian university, situated in the world’s highest city at an altitude of 4,000 metres, owes its foundation – just like the TU Bergakademie Freiberg – to the silver ore deposits here on the ‘Cerro Rico’ mountain. Key areas of cooperation between the partners include geological exploration of the ore-rich region, sustainability in the extraction and processing of raw materials, the recovery of valuable materials, environmental protection – particularly with regard to water – and renewable energy sources. The focus is on lithium and the rare earth elements, which are strategic metals for Europe.  Read more...

High-quality imaging using ultrasound: new start-up project UltraFocus develops software for structural inspection

Whether it’s ageing bridges or dilapidated buildings, ultrasonic measurements can reveal defects, weak points and cracks during safety inspections of large structures. However, the key to a professional assessment of structural integrity lies in the computer-based visualisation of these measurement results. In geophysics, such visualisations can already be calculated quickly and to a high standard today. A new start-up project at TU Bergakademie Freiberg has now set out to apply solutions from geophysics to structural inspection for the first time.  Read more...

When a robot scans a dam wall - Scientific Diving Centre and Institute of Computer Science develop diving robots for critical infrastructure

The Scientific Diving Centre (SDC) at TU Bergakademie Freiberg not only trains the next generation of academic divers. Together with the Institute of Computer Science, the SDC has now developed a tool that will play a crucial role in critical infrastructure in the future. It is a diving robot that analyses the safety of dams in places where technology has so far found it difficult to reach: under water. At the current IFAT trade fair in Munich, the researchers are now presenting their "SUBmarIne" project for inspecting structures under water. The team trialled the submersible robot at dams - where it will be used in the future.  Read more...
